How to Use an EMS Device: Pad Placement, Modes and Weekly Routine

In short: To use an EMS device well: charge it, start with clean dry skin, place pads on the belly of the muscle (never the chest, spine or head), begin at the lowest intensity and work up to a visible but comfortable contraction for 15–25 minutes, three to four sessions a week per muscle group. Below: placement maps for abs, arms, legs and glutes, mode selection, and pad care.
Before you start
- Charge fully. A weak battery produces weak, inconsistent pulses — the most common "it suddenly feels feeble" cause.
- Clean, dry, unmoisturised skin. Body lotion is the enemy of pad contact; wash and dry the area first.
- Inspect the pads. Silicone pads should sit flush against skin. Rinse off any lint or residue and let them dry before the session.
Pad placement: the part most people get wrong
The rule for every muscle group: pads go on the fleshy belly of the muscle, spaced a few centimetres apart, never on bone, joints or tendons. If you have had the device a few weeks and abs sessions feel routine, this is how you unlock the rest of the body:
Abs
Pads either side of the navel over the muscle, not up on the ribs and not below the waistband line. You should feel an even drawing-in across the midsection, not a pinch at one pad.
Arms
Centre pads on the biceps bulge or the horseshoe of the triceps. Arms need noticeably less intensity than abs — drop several levels when you move up from your usual abdominal setting.
Legs
Front of thigh (quads) mid-way between hip and knee, or the calf's widest point. Avoid the back of the knee entirely, and avoid any visible varicose veins.
Glutes
Upper, outer quadrant of each side — the meatiest part, well away from the tailbone.
Never place pads
Across the chest or heart, on the neck, throat or head, over the spine, on broken or numb skin, or anywhere during pregnancy. With a pacemaker or any implanted device, EMS is off the table without GP approval.
Choosing modes and intensity
Modes vary the pulse pattern: on the EMS Care ABS Trainer you get 6, from a gentle warm-up rhythm through to firm sustained contractions, with 10 intensity levels inside each. The working rule: pick the mode whose rhythm you can tolerate for a full session, then set intensity where the muscle visibly tightens but nothing hurts. If you are grimacing, you are one level too high; if you feel only tingling, you are one too low or the pads are off the muscle belly.
How long and how often
| Question | Working answer |
|---|---|
| Session length | 15–25 minutes per muscle group |
| Frequency | 3–4 sessions a week per group, once you are conditioned |
| Rest | Give the same group about 48 hours between sessions — stimulated muscle needs recovery like trained muscle |
| Stop immediately if | Anything is painful, skin reddens beyond a mild flush, or you feel light-headed |
A weekly whole-body rotation
Rotating groups keeps every session inside the recovery rule: abs Monday and Thursday, arms Tuesday and Friday, legs or glutes Wednesday and Saturday, Sunday off. If you are still in your first fortnight with the device, run the gentler beginner version in our ems training at home plan before adopting this rotation.
Cleaning and caring for washable silicone pads
Rinse pads in warm water after use — no soap scrubbing, no alcohol wipes, both of which degrade the surface. Air-dry completely before the next session, store flat rather than folded, and keep them away from radiators. Grip fading mid-week is nearly always residue or damp storage rather than worn pads; a proper rinse and overnight dry restores it.
When it does not seem to be working
- Contraction feels weak: recharge first, then reposition pads onto the muscle belly.
- Tingling but no contraction: intensity too low, or skin was moisturised.
- One pad stings: pads too close together or one is sitting on bone.
- No sensation at all: check pad-to-skin contact — hairs and lotion both break it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use an EMS device every day?
Daily use is fine if you rotate muscle groups; daily sessions on the same group skip the recovery window and stall progress.
Which mode should I use for arms?
Start with the same gentle mode you began with on abs, several intensity levels lower. Arms reach a visible contraction far sooner than your core does.
Why do I feel tingling but see no contraction?
Pads off the muscle belly, intensity too low, or poor skin contact — in that order of likelihood. Fix placement before you touch the intensity button.
How do I keep silicone pads grippy?
Warm-water rinse after every session, full air-dry, flat storage. Treated that way, washable pads are the low-maintenance part of the routine — no refills to buy.
